The world is not real. Or rather, the way we see the world is fake in that so much of our lives revolve around what we’ve been told is “just the way it goes”.
According to sociologist Lisa Wade the link is the pervasive hookup culture that dominates the modern university experience in her fascinating new study examining the roots and realities of the phenomenon, American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus. Wade culls together academic research, quantitative data, and accounts from college students all over America, unpacking the history and complex nuances of the hookup and the resulting hookup culture. American Hookup offers readers valuable insight into the positives and negatives this particular culture has to offer not only college students, but in new modes of imagining more diverse, compassionate, and inclusive demonstrations of human sexuality.
Along with her concise detailing of what hookup culture is, Wade also dispels a number of myths about it, including the one that everyone on a college campus is having loads of sex, all the time, with multiple partners. In her introduction Wade writes: Scholars using the University of Chicago’s General Social Survey have shown that they actually report slightly fewer sexual partners than Gen-Xers did.
Millennials look more similar to the baby boomer generation than they do to the wild sexual cohort that they are frequently imagined to be. For one, Wade sees the media playing a huge role in this misperception. She also notes that just because people aren’t themselves hooking up, it doesn’t mean they still aren’t unwilling participants in the entire culture of hookups.
Hookup culture has a ripple-out and trickle-down effect — and a mostly negative one — even on those individuals who have opted out. It has infiltrated our lives, obscuring our ability to envision better alternatives: We need to understand what’s happening on college campuses because what’s happening there is happening everywhere. Wade asks, “How do two people establish that an intimate moment between them wasn’t meaningful?
Millennials are having less sex than any generation in 60 years. Here’s why it matters.

Daniel Episcope has definitely seen some troubling things in college, like when he visited a big state school and saw a guy slipping something into punch he was mixing for a party. One woman had told him she wanted to thank him for helping her move in. As he drifted in and out of blackouts, he realized he was having sex with her. He mostly laughs it off, but it was troubling, too.
Another time, back in California, Episcope stopped by a party at his fraternity after work. He chatted with a woman he knew slightly, then said good night to her and his friends, and headed upstairs to go to sleep. About 15 minutes later, he said, the woman came into his room, very drunk and making it very clear that she was interested in him. He was sober, he was tired, he had a girlfriend, he had absolutely no intention of having sex with her, he said.

There are all sorts of reasons why your power supply might not work. What if a stronger than expected EMP damaged your generator? With a few extra components, and a handful of basic tools, you can easily convert a standard vehicle battery into a power pack that will let you get some essentials running again.
Alternatively, you can run a few lamps to provide light while you sit out a storm in your root shelter.
It’s natural to have some sort of vague expectations for your partner post-hookup, even if you *thought* you were cool with a casual make-out sesh or a FWB situation.

Two men warn me not to look too deeply. There is, they say, the potential for retribution from those who benefit — and profit — from the silence. Before then he has other stories. He begins by talking about what happens when chemsex sessions derail, much of which clusters around one word: This does not pertain only to sex. Indeed, the drug GHB gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid , which is an anaesthetic that depresses the central nervous system, producing effects similar to both alcohol and ecstasy, is notorious for the minuscule window it provides between intoxication and overdose.
The tiniest increase in dose can render a user unconscious, often for hours on end. Overdoses are frequently accidental, or self-administered.

Perhaps you can identify with Mann. How often do you find yourself feeling lonely, craving more affection than you get? Maybe you wish your spouse or partner were a bit more demonstrative of his or her love. One in four Americans reports not having not a single person to talk to about important issues. Loneliness among American adults has increased 16 percent in the last decade. We feel hunger because we need food, just as we feel thirsty because we need water, and tired because we need sleep.
Our bodies know what they require to function properly, and research suggests that affection belongs on that list, right behind food, water, and rest. Just as lack of food, water, and rest have their detrimental effects, so too does the lack of affection. In a recent study of adults, I examined the construct of skin hunger—and the social, relational, and health deficits with which it is associated.
The results were consistent, and striking. People with high levels of skin hunger are disadvantaged in multiple ways, compared to those with moderate or low levels. Specifically, compared to people with less skin hunger, people who feel more affection-deprived: They have less social support and lower relationship satisfaction.
